At the individual state tournament, every one of our entries won one of their matches. Those athletes included Max Mainman, Byron Panrudkevich , Alex Sparks, Carly Caylor, Brandi Swenson, Antonia Maher, Angela Sun, and Charlotte DeHoop.
Carly and Brandi paired together to win the girls state doubles title. An impressive feat of winning 6 matches in the 64 entry draw. They finished the season a perfect 15-0 in doubles.
Coach Mark Swenson had this to share, "We will all miss our only senior, Carly. She was a positive driving influence on the team."
Congratulations to all!
The Hawks Tennis Teams Head to State Tournament!
Our regular season concluded with the 1A State Finals at the Racquet Club last weekend. The Girls’ team cruised to a state title earning 14 points. The boys also earned 14 points and also won the team title over second-place Desert Christian with 13. Each of the six starting players, from both teams, won at least one round which contributed heavily to the State Final titles for both. Very exciting!
Individual honors went to many. Carly Caylor and Brandi Swenson won the Girls’ doubles title, losing only one game in the entire tournament. This was Brandi's second doubles title in her two years playing for the Hawks. Antonia Maher finished second in singles losing a very close championship match. 2nd place wins were awarded to Antonia Maher in Girls’ singles, Alex Sparks in Boys’ singles, and the doubles team of Max Mainman and Byron Panrudkevich, who narrowly missed the 1st place spot in a close final match. This was Max's second trip to the tournament in his two years on the team.
To celebrate the end of a fantastic regular season, we enjoyed a fun team party at Tucson Country Club with tennis, swimming, good food, cake and ice cream. We all send a huge thank you to Margo Caylor, who made those arrangements.
As we head into post-season play, six girls and three boys will continue to compete. The girls have earned a spot in the team State Tournament. Their first match will be April 27 at 3:00 pm (location TBA). The Boys’ team, a group of mostly freshman and sophomore students, enjoyed success throughout the regular season but failed to make the top 16 of the team State Tournament. As every team is permitted one singles and one doubles entry into the state Division III individual tournament, our top 3 boys, Max, Byron, and Alex will continue practicing through this event.
The individual State Tournament will be played at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale and draws large crowds. The bracket will likely be available on Monday night or Tuesday morning. The AIA will post them online at azpreps365.com. Go to Brackets and scroll down to select AIA Division III Tennis teams, select Boys’ or Girls’ singles or doubles. Tickets to the tournament games, in Glendale, are $10 each.
Congratulations and good luck!
