Expedition to Costa Rica

Expedition to Costa Rica

Dear Parents and Students of The Gregory Middle and Upper Schools,

It is with tremendous excitement that we announce the Third Annual Gregory School Expedition to Costa Rica.

This amazing nine-day trip to Costa Rica, scheduled for May 29 - June 6, 2017, enables us to explore many tropical ecosystems, as we make our way from the Caribbean Coast to the Pacific Coast. Students will learn, first hand and up close, about the plants, animals, and geology of this friendly Central American country. Monkeys, sloths, crocodiles and tree frogs all await us, and Mr. Krohn will be along to help amateur ornithologists identify exotic birds along the way. Costa Rica is, among other things, a naturalist’s dream,

There is also a strong adventure component to this trip, as we will go ziplining, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling. It has been our experience on past trips that these more physically challenging opportunities help our students develop a genuine sense of self-confidence and community.

Among the many highlights of this excursion are our visits to Tortuguero National Park (accessible only by boat,) Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, La Fortuna Waterfalls, hot springs and bubbling mud pots, the Pacific beach town of Guanacaste, Rincon de la Vieja National Park, and Palo Verde National Park.

We will be using Education First (EF) as our tour company. We will stay in hotels, and all transportation, meals and entry fees are included. We have a professional tour guide/naturalist with us 24/7 throughout the entire journey.

This Costa Rican Expedition is available for both middle and upper school students. Students in 5th and 6th grades must be accompanied by at least one parent, 7th and 8th graders may travel without a parent, and upper school students, of course, may travel unaccompanied. We are happy to accommodate all families who wish to join us. Upper school students, this trip is perfect for those who will have taken either Intro to Botany or Neotropical Ecology.

Our first informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31, 3:45 - 4:30 in room 402. We hope to see many of you there. If you are interested in the Costa Rica trip, but cannot attend this meeting, please either email Mrs. Miller ( or stop by Room 402 (Middle School) before or after school.

We look forward to seeing you on August 31st.

It’s difficult to express in words all that’s special about The Gregory School and why I love teaching here. Most importantly, our students are a kind and sweet lot...talented, inquisitive, energetic and highly creative. It’s both a joy and a huge privilege to spend several years with such young people as they grow and mature, meet increasingly difficult challenges, learn to persevere, and develop both passion and empathy. Life at The Gregory School is a fine balance between excitement, surprises and opportunities to explore new avenues and the reinforcement and deepening of essential life lessons. Truly, The Gregory School is one of a kind...a real gem. I cannot imagine teaching anywhere else.
