Genius Hour is a special time fifth graders have every Friday morning, when the rest of the school has first Exploration. During Genius Hour, fifth graders have the opportunity to pursue an individual passion and create projects of their own design. Shared products range from fundraisers, to slide presentations, to science experiments. Genius Hour provides a chance for kids to research what they’re interested in. It also gives kids an opportunity to make a difference in their community.
This year’s Genius Hour projects showcased the variety of interests and talents fifth graders have. Some projects fifth graders did this year focused on animals and conservation, such as supporting African Elephant and White Rhino protection efforts, educating others about the roles dogs play in the military, and raising environmental awareness for the ocean. Sports and athletics were another area of interest. One project raised enough money to purchase five new basketballs and a new air pump for Middle School students. Other projects included music, art, family trees, baking and cake decorating, technology, health, and education.
