Job Overview

The Gregory School has a 5th - 12th grade curriculum that spirals through strands of Mandarin each year. Classes cover the four different language skills and introduce students to the diversity of speaking communities around the globe.

The successful candidate will teach the grammar and vocabulary needed to translate and understand Mandarin. There will be an integrated assessment system to monitor student progress to ensure that learning is secure and will give them good preparation for the next grade. The focus is on active learning, through discussion, practice work, oral communication, or other hands-on activities. Curriculum and assessment models used at The Gregory School are based on current best practices.

Being part of The Gregory School community includes creating Friday exploration courses and interim week activities that extend learning beyond the classroom curriculum.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the foreign language team, prepare lessons in accordance with TGS Middle/Upper School Curriculum.
  • Incorporate cultural lessons into all levels.
  • Be open to organize a Chinese or International Club and generally promote the language and diverse culture of TGS.
  • Make use of many, varied formative assessment tools to judge student progress towards knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply.
  • Make effective use of Google Classroom and Powerschool for communication with students and parents in relation to assignments and grades.
  • Work as an effective team member as part of the Foreign Language Department.
  • Communicate with parents appropriately as needed.
  • Utilize effective classroom management skills.

Qualifications

  • Candidates will have:
  • Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. in the Mandarin-related field
  • Mastery of spoken and written Mandarin, including traditional and simplified characters.
  • Prior experience teaching in middle or upper grades
  • Teacher certification preferred
  • Ability to work well with people, especially adolescents
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
